"According to Chinese legends, New Year first started with a battle against a mythical beast called the Nian. The Nian would come on the first day of New Year to destroy and terrorize. To protect themselves, villagers put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year as a sacrifice in hopes that it would then leave the household in peace.
Legend has it that the Nian is afraid of the color red, and so the dragon guardian of the village, Ryu, clothed himself in crimson and battled the fierce Nian for the sake of those who believed in him."
